WKU exits the C-USA tournament early after falling to North Texas 5-1

The WKU Soccer team’s (7-9-3, 4-5-1) campaign was over when they were defeated 5-1 by North Texas (12-5-2, 7-2-1) in the Conference USA tournament’s opening round on Wednesday morning in Charlotte, North Carolina.

North Texas got the game going quickly, scoring three goals in the opening period. Jenna Sheely, a senior from North Texas, caused problems for WKU by giving Mean Green two goals and an assist.

The Hilltoppers’ lone goal was scored by WKU senior Kayla Meyer. In the 53rd minute of the game, redshirt senior Lucy Lyon and fifth-year Lyric Schimdt helped Meyers score.

Just two minutes into the second half, senior Madison Drenowatz gave the Mean Green their fourth goal of the contest. The game’s sixth goal for UNT was scored by Summer Brown, a freshman.

The Lady Toppers took a total of 13 shots throughout the contest, seven of which were on target and one of which found the back of the net. The Mean Green also had a ridiculous shooting rate of 71% with 13 attempts, seven of which were on target.

With four goals and an assist, Meyer ends the season as the Hilltoppers’ leading offensive performer.

This week, North Texas will advance to the next round of the C-USA tournament. The Hilltopper’s 2022 campaign is over after the defeat.
