The famous civil rights leader also had a charitable heart. If you have the connection between “America’s Sweetheart,” Julia Roberts, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on your 2022 Bingo card, I have some great news for you!
See, Roberts turned 55 over the weekend. A recent interview with Gayle King, in which the actress discussed her connection to Dr. Malcolm Luther and Coretta Scott King since the day she was born, appeared as her name started to gain popularity online. Literally.
“The King family paid for my hospital bill,” she explained according to Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously, my parents couldn’t pay for the hospital bill. My parents had a theater school in Atlanta called the Actor’s and Writer’s Workshop. And one day, Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school ‘cause they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids. My mom is like, ‘Sure, come on over.’ And they just all became friends and they helped us out of a jam.”
Yes, that is accurate. The hospital bill for the birth of Ulia Roberts was covered by the King family. I’m not sure if this or the news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stayed at Tyler Perry’s house in 2020, when they were stepping back from their royal responsibilities and attempting to find a way forward in the face of the family’s racism, is the more shocking celebrity fun tidbit at this time.
We appear to have been hit with one astounding revelation or occurrence after another since the beginning of this new decade. At least this one wasn’t horrifying or heartbreaking, which is something. That kind of news has certainly been shared with us enough times to span several lifetimes.
